ABSTRACT CUSHION DESIGN
INSPIRED BY PAINTER MORRIS LOUIS

MORRIS LOUIS
•AMERICAN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST PAINTER •

I never thought I’d create a cushion design based on one of Morris Louis’ paintings!

I’ve loved his paintings for years!

Ever since my artist husband, Ian, was an art student in the 70’s, I fell in love with Morris Louis’ massive paintings (many over 10 feet long!), with their flat, intense colors in strong, repetitive compositions.

Because of their scale, I’ve always thought that their fantastic impact as paintings would be completely lost as contemporary needlepoint designs.

But I did find one of his paintings I could adapt!

I’ve updated the colours for today’s modern interiors and changed the proportions to suit the scale of a cushion.

The result: a large 24" square cushion, ‘POURED COLOURS’, with its controlled multi-coloured vertical stripes, that uncontrollably “flow” at the bottom!

My tribute to Morris Louis!

WHY NOT FRAME IT ?

What a brilliant idea from one of my clients!

She stitched it with silk threads, and chose a deep burgundy suede mat, with a flat black frame.

What a beautiful combination of textures and materials. Stunning!

It becomes a piece of needlepoint art...

creating a very dramatic effect!
