DYNAMIC PRAIRIE STYLE
CUSHION DESIGNS

These bold geometric Prairie Style cushion designs, with their natural colours, have been created to complement two Prairie Style designs from ZIVA’s Seat Covers Collection.

Also, have a look at our Stained Glass Patterns for Needlepoint Art adapted from Prairie Style stained glass panels.

THE PRAIRIE SCHOOL, a late 19th and early 20th century architectural style, most common to the Midwestern United States, drew its inspiration from many influences prevalent at the time…namely:

  • the design aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts Movement and
  • the craze for Japanese designs in Europe

ITS CHARACTERISTICS

Simplicity and Discipline!

The works of the Prairie School architects were usually marked by horizontal lines, which were thought to evoke and relate to the native prairie landscape.

Natural materials of wood, brick and stone were predominant and the number of materials was limited.

Art glass windows, similar to the graphic above, with straight-line geometric patterns suited the design philosophy of the Prairie style.

GINKGO LEAVES

The Ginkgo Leaves cushion design is stunning, whether rectangular or square.

The choice is yours!

The Ginkgo tree symbolises longevity and hope for future generations in Japanese decorative art.

You can see the Japanese influence on the Prairie Style in this iconic Ginkgo Leaves Cushion design.

THE COLOURS

It has a geometric border in natural colours of soft cool greens, taupe and dark terra cotta.

The sage green background highlights the central stylized pattern of light grey and dark terra cotta ginkgo leaves.

Simple and dramatic, it’s a perfect accent on this contemporary daybed!

EDEN PRAIRIE

This Eden Prairie Cushion design, with its square, geometrical and symmetrical pattern, is reminiscent of stained glass windows from the period.

The colours are classic Prairie Style…soft muted taupes and grey-browns, accented by terra cotta red and gold.

I’ve updated it by adding more black accents to the design, to give it a more contemporary feel… ideal with today’s neutral interiors.
