WHAT IS ART DECO?

After World War I, there was a desire for a sleek, streamlined style, with basic elements of sophisticated neutral colours, clean uncluttered lines, and stepped forms to create a very subtle and elegant effect.

Our cellphone case or glasses case was inspired by the decorative arts of the 1920's and 1930's in Europe and America, which sprang from the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925.  

It was influenced by archaeological finds in Egypt and Africa, Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and most importantly, Cubism, with its abstract shapes and geometric patterns. Also, new materials arrived, including chrome plating, stainless steel and plastic.

Their style influence is unmistakable…… 

• flat, graphic use of colour
• lively semi-abstract patterns with simple vibrant colours
• asymmetrical compositions

You can see these basic elements in architecture, such as the Chrysler Building in New York, plus art and textiles...

and fashion and interiors.

A sleeker form of the style, called Streamline Moderne, appeared in the 1930s, featuring curving forms and smooth, polished surfaces. Art Deco was a truly international style, but its dominance ended with the beginning of World War II and the rise of the strictly functional and unadorned styles of modern architecture and the International Style of architecture that followed.

CLASSIC COLOURS

We’ve created a definitive Art Deco design, called 'Streamline Deco' which features a wheat colour, a light grey and black only. 

This very disciplined colour choice emphasizes the classic asymmetrical composition of graphic abstract curves and bold straight directional lines.

You will notice that we have placed the design asymmetrically as well to emphasize the force of the bold angled lines.

For the size of your cellphone, we recommend you add/delete stitches from the row(s) of outside border.

We kept the colours neutral on our model for a very dramatic effect.

However you could go to one of our options of …..

What if you wanted some colour to the design? We have also added an option of a warm range of colours to a cool range, if that is what you prefer.

Why not stitch one colour scheme on one side and a second one on the other side? That would definitely work with the glasses case.

The yarn colours for the alternate schemes will be in the newsletter as well.

Please note: You could stitch it one time and finish it by using a fabric backing or stitch it twice with the pattern reversed. We will show you both charts to make your stitching enjoyable!
