What an unusual inspiration for a handbag design!
Let’s follow our model on a virtual trip to New York, to find my inspirational source for the stunning needlepoint bag she’s wearing!!
Here she is walking through... But heading where?

BIG CLUE............
We can see the Chrysler Building up ahead!
Architect William Van Alen’s Chrysler Building
is the archetypal Art Deco Skyscraper of the ‘zigzag’ era!
It has been an iconic part of the New York City skyline since 1930...
well recognised for its seven radiating terraced arches at the crown.
So let’s go inside……
OUR FINAL DESTINATION...
The main lobby of the Chrysler Building!
An Art Deco jewel!
The lavish ground-floor lobby is a stylish ‘modernistic’ composition of hand painted ceiling murals, African marble and chrome … Art Deco to the max!
And what is my inspiration here?
THE ELEVATOR DOORS!
These elevator doors with their lotus-shaped marquetry pattern are works of art. They are masterfully covered in exotic woods and stainless steel… and are an excellent starting point for my handbag design.
THE DESIGN CHANGES
But the first thing I did was ‘flip’ the design!
If you look closely at the photo, you can see that I turned the design of the elevator doors upside down!
I did this so that the arched Art Deco motif would follow the lines of the rounded shape of the bag that I had envisaged for my client.
From there, I added curved asymmetrical shapes to give the handbag design its own identity.
A great start!
THE COLOURS
The next step was to determine the colours. I basically had free rein with regard to the colours of the needlepoint tapestry...
keeping in mind my client’s elegant wardrobe of classic neutrals.
But she still wanted it to be bold and dramatic!
So I selected a range of greys and a soft wheat colour, accented by a curvaceous cranberry red stylized lotus flower!
A soft grey-turquoise was added to coordinate with other accessories in her wardrobe.
I particularly like how the bold curved design ‘sits’ on top of the very geometric background!
An Art Deco Delight for today’s woman!
BACK POCKETS I designed two needlepoint pockets for the back of the handbag, in similar details and colours to the front, for easy access to her cell phone and keys. My client picked a lovely soft-grey light-weight wool for making up the handbag. I designed it so that a smaller zippered bag can be inserted to ensure her contents are safe. |
CLOSE UP This detail photo of the ‘Black Chrysler’ handbag design demonstrates the stylish modernity of the 1920’s and 30’s. |
Its timeless design shows how well it still works with today’s styles.
With the introduction of classic colours, a contemporary handbag is created that won't become out-dated!
This classic motif from the 1930’s Chrysler Building is well suited to other colour combinations and sizes...a perfect base for creating more contemporary handbag designs.

BLACK AND WHITE CHRYSLER HANDBAG DESIGN
This graphic photo at left shows a dramatic colour scheme of black, white and greys. These bold neutral colours emphasize the clean lines of this timeless design.
Its colour combination makes this handbag a true classic. It can be worn in any season... from tailored black suits in winter, to casual whites in summer.
BLUE CHRYSLER HANDBAG DESIGN
I had a request to develop the Chrysler design in a range of blues.
What an amazing difference this makes to the bag design!
My concept drawing shows a dominant central motif with colours of cobalt blue and blue-turquoise: the background colours range from a soft grey-blue, to warm grey and navy. A deep purple was added to give it some zip!
From the concept drawing above to the actual hand-painted canvas!
The range of colours is stunning!
This gives you an idea of the high standard of stitch–painting you will receive from ZIVA.
I’m just going to ship this painted canvas to my client, and I thought you’d like to see it.
Two great alternative colour schemes for the CHRYSLER HANDBAG!
PLEASE NOTE: I’m also suggesting an alternate more traditional way of finishing the Chrysler handbag… with wide bottom and side panels which continue up to a standard shoulder strap. This gives you a bigger bag for all your stuff!
Of course, should you want a design or colour range just for you, please contact me!
