'ANATOLIA' NEEDLEPOINT TEA COSY :
CREATED WITH EXOTIC FLAIR

I wanted to create a needlepoint tea cosy design that would have many elements of a Persian or Oriental carpet in order for it to coordinate well in anyone’s home.

When designing interiors, I’ve always appreciated how Persian carpets fit beautifully into any home setting, whether contemporary or traditional.

INSPIRATION FROM ANATOLIA!

The result… A tea cosy design with exotic flair!

I've adapted various typical classic carpet design elements from Anatolia   (now Turkey):

• Influenced by the carpet designs from the Ghiordès region, I developed the exotic shape and the elegant decorative crown for the tea cosy.

 

• The central medallion is a typical motif found in the carpets from the Ouchak region from the 17th century on. 
  
• Stylized decorative flowers (probably tulips here) are typical for decorating the borders of Anatolian carpets (with long curved stems): one of two flowers (tulips and carnations) typically found in Ottoman art in general.

CLASSIC COLOURS

I also looked to the classic use of carpet colours from Anatolia.

Traditionally with these carpets, vivid, rich colours are used in bold distinct tones, with a particular tendency for the primary colours of red, yellow and blue…striking colours that would contrast well in today's neutral contemporary interiors.

Also I found that warm colours are generally predominant in these elegant carpets.

So the ‘Anatolia Red’ needlepoint tea cosy was created in traditional colours of terra cotta red, yellow ochre, cobalt blue and navy blue.

A CONTEMPORARY TWIST OF COLOUR

But I couldn’t resist creating another colour scheme that cools the colours right down!

The second colour scheme, ‘Anatolia Grey’, takes the same traditional Anatolian elements and adds a contemporary colour twist, particularly by adding the warm grey on the border.

The rest of the modern colour scheme includes a deep rose-red, a greyed-purple, and two tones of turquoise.
