This free needlepoint picture frame design, ‘DECO DIAMONDS’, was created and stitched exclusively for my third VIVA ZIVA! newsletter #0903.

DELICATE DIAMOND DESIGN:
SOFT COLOURS AND A LOT OF TEXTURE

The refined geometric lines of this picture frame design are reminiscent of the ‘moderne’ look of stylized restraint found in the 1930’s.

Its very rhythmic design moves around the frame, yet it’s still symmetrical so the frame can be used horizontally or vertically.

Your choice.

 SUBTLE COLOURS

The disciplined design combines 3 neutral colours (grey-blue, taupe and wheat) to purposely create a study in texture , with no strong contrast in colour.

By restraining the colours, the frame will not dominate or distract from the subject you want to frame. Very important.

However, I still wanted the frame to have interesting depth, which the texture provides.

By alternating the combination of these colours, different textures and effects can be created… from very little contrast (the grey-blue and the taupe) to more contrast (the grey-blue and the wheat).

The overall result provides a soft, elegant and delicate textured background to your favourite photo.

THE 2-4-6-8 STITCH

The name of this stitch tells you how to do it! What could be easier!

It’s a series of diamond shapes that can be stitched all in one colour or you can alternate the colours of the stitches (see photo at right).

Also, all the diamonds can be stitched in one direction or you can turn the second row 45° and create more interesting textures again.

Don’t worry, I’ll show you how in the newsletter!

The VIVA ZIVA! Newsletter includes easy to follow instructions and charts so you can practice the 2-4-6-8 stitch before you start stitching the picture frame.

It also shows you the stitching in progress and suggestions for finishing it.

I’ve also added another stitch for you to try in this newsletter!

It’s the Backstitch, stitched in black, to create a crisp line to outline the photo.

This stitch is optional and stitched at the end.

Of course the classic basketweave stitch is used to create the very ART DECO 45° angles throughout the design.
