This stylish tray design was created and stitched exclusively for my FIFTEENTH FREE VIVA ZIVA ! Newsletter #1415.
Subscribe now to ZIVA’s free newsletter ... to be released in April, 2014 and stitch this abstract design “Geometric Primaries” ….adapted from a painting by the Dutch abstract artist, PIET MONDRIAN.
Early 20th century Dutch painter, PIET MONDRIAN, was an important leader in the development of modern abstract art and a major exponent of the Dutch abstract art movement known as De Stijl (“The Style”).
He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors.
The resulting works possess an extreme formal purity that embodies the artist’s spiritual belief in a harmonious cosmos.
Mondrian’s influence extended not only to abstract painting and sculpture, but to forms of the international style in architecture as well.
Through the teachings of the Bauhaus in Germany and its offshoots in the US, his theories were spread throughout the Western World.
Examining the tendencies in the 1960s in American abstract painting…hard edge abstraction, optical painting or colour field painting… in almost every case a line may be traced back to Mondrian.
To create this sampler in clean, crisp lines like Mondrian’s paintings, I limited the selection of most of the stitches to vertical or horizontal ones.
If a diagonal stitch was used, I chose only those that created small square or rectangular blocks.
SINGLE PARISIAN This easy vertical stitch comprises alternating one stitch over 2 threads and one stitch over 4 threads to create a tight woven effect. Perfect and quick for backgrounds! |
DOUBLE PARISIAN Same idea but alternate with 2 vertical stitches over 2 threads, then 2 vertical stitches over 4 threads. It gives a bold knitted look. |
CASHMERE STITCH The Cashmere Stitch, is worked similarly to Tent stitch, working right to left, but is worked as a block of stitches featuring differing lengths. As shown in the photo above, a group of 2 short and 2 long diagonal stitches is worked to form a small rectangle. |
STAGGERED CASHMERE STITCH The blocks can also be worked staggering each row to create a completely different effect as shown above. |
THE DESIGN
The finished stitch sampler at left, 'Geometric Primaries’, was adapted from one of Mondrian’s paintings, Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow.
This 9.5” square design has 15 squares and rectangles divided by thick black vertical and horizontal lines.
I changed the colour of one of the rectangles from white to grey to update the design to fit better into today’s interiors.
I also devised that each square or rectangle in the same colour was stitched with a different stitch.
For example, with the 4 red rectangles, you’ll see one stitched in the Cross Stitch, one in the Scotch Stitch, one in the Cashmere Stitch and one in the Double Parisian Stitch.
THE TRAY
I selected a small 10.5” square tray in black from Sudberry House for this stitch sampler because of its clean simple lines.
It’s easy to assemble, complete with a glass top to protect your needlework.
A perfect complement to the ‘Geometric Primaries’ tapestry!
Note that the square tray is also available in white or red which would also work well with this free needlepoint design.
A perfect size tray for a couple of cups of tea or coffee... for when you invite a good friend over for a chat…. OR .... |
This small tray is an ideal size for two glasses of champagne, before an intimate dinner! |
Light the candles and pour the champagne!
This bold modern stitch sampler design works as a wonderful accent in today’s contemporary interiors.
Give it a try!
